OCR transfer to Word fails

J

Jason Warren

The MS Office scanning tool seems to do a decent recognition job, but
when I try to transfer the result to Word, an error window opens that
says the transfer failed and instructs me to make sure Office is
correctly installed. I've tried re-installing and applyng all the
updates, but it still fails.

Anyone know what to do about this? I searched the predictable useless
KnowledgeBase and found nothing.

TIA

I'm not too familiar with the utility, since I use the software that
came with my scanner instead, but I can try and help.

What are the exact steps you are using? Are you using the "Send text
to Word" command when it fails?

What version of Office are you using and what patches are installed?

Beth, it is (Dell) factory-installed Office 2003. It's the Basic edition
that doesn't include PowerPoint, but I suspect that's got nothing to do
with this. I have applied all the available patches. I also tried re-
installing and re-applying the patches.

The error window pops up when I'm in the Office Tools Document Imaging
(or Scanning) app when I click Tools > "Send Text to Word". A blank
word doc opens up...and stays blank. Behind it is the popup from the
Imaging app. The error suggests that Office is not correctly installed,
but I don't know how to do it better than it is already! Besides re-
installing, I've also used the Repair option in the Add/Remove Programs
cpl.

I'm stumped.

Open Document Imaging and go to Help/About Microsoft Document Imaging.
What is the complete version number? It would be something like
11.0.####.#

I'm unable to reproduce the error but I'm wondering if your virus
scanner may be part of the problem. What virus scanner do you use?
Also, are you able to open Word documents outside of the application
by double-clicking them from an Exploring window such as your Desktop?

It reports that it's version 11.0.1897.0.

I use McAfee Security Center. I have tried terminating its AV component
and the entire suite but that seems to make no difference.

Yes.

Then you have all of the latest updates - thanks for verifying.

You know, there's been a few reports regarding McAfee conflicts and
Office lately and turning it off doesn't stop all virus scanning
processes. Try starting Windows in Safe Mode and see if the error
still occurs.

I tried Safe Mode and also used MSCONFIG to disable *everything* at
startup. Neither made a difference. Sigh.

Jason
Beth,

A thought: I have looked in the Application and System logs to see if
there was any more information about the failure and there is not.

I'm wondering if there are log files for Office that I don't know about
or if there are debugging otpions I can enable to find out what's going
wrong. Do you know of any? (I spent decades in software
design/development/management and we *always* built in debugging aids. I
just don't know if Office has any that mere users can take advantage
of.)

Thanks,

Jason

Hi Jason,

So far I've been unable to find anything on this issue - nor do I know
of any debugging options you can use for this. :-(

Did you try updating the driver for your scanner? Even though this is
a Word error this could be the cause.

Beth, I keep all the drivers, scanner included, up to date. The scanner
seems just fine and the Imaging app produces a good OCR result. It's
just the final step that fails.

I've looked through what I could find at the MS site, but there seems to
be no way to get support from MS because this copy of Word was installed
by Dell. Dell has been no help so far.
