Odd Hexidecimal Files on Server

Hello all:

We have a rather odd issue related to Word and Excel files in particular.
We have noticed a number of files accumulating on our server in directories
where we have Word or Excel files. These files have no extension and simply
are a series of eight hexidecimal digits. This and some files with a ~ in
front of their name (many with a .tmp extension) stay on the server.

When you double click on these files they open in either Word or Excel as
actual files.

I would think the ~ files would be the temporaries that Office creates upon
opening the file to tell that the file is open I suppose. However, I do not
know why they remain on the server. Likewise, the hexidecimal files boggle
my mind.

Anyone have a similar problem? Know what they are, how to stop them from
generating?

Thanks.
