odd symbols when I email to my editor

I am using Microsoft Word - text Times New Roman - which is set standard on
my computer and when I us the symbols ", ', ), (, " each on of the items
comes out as just a bunch of symbols and it's getting frustraing . They said
eithrer fix the problem or work elsewere....help?
