OE NG message slider button

I searched for an answer to this simple question to no avail.
I need to reset the button on the slider bar for one newsgroup
which keeps opening the referenced group at the middle of the group of
all listed messages instead of at the top message in the sequence of threads.
I've tried putting my cursor on the button and holding it down at the top
of the messages both when the NG is opened and when it is closed. Nothing
changed;on subsequent openings, the button remained in the middle of the slider
bar,opening the NG in the middle of the messages.
