Off group subject but...how do MVPs follow threads ?s

N

Norm

I've been curious as to how a MVPs (or others with many posts and
replies) keeps track of posts/threads?

Do you download all threads?
Or leave online and let your "newsreader" maintain all history?
Or ____?

I've always done the former. I manage all newsgroup activity in my mail
program. I send a copy of my posts to myself and redirect a copy of all
replies. I often, well sometimes ;), access those archived posts but it
is somewhat time consuming process and I'm interested if there are more
efficient alternatives.

I've posted similar questions to this over the years on this Word
newsgroup and other newsgroups and either they've generated no response
or ones that were not very helpful. IMHO.

Thanks.

Hi Norm:

"Next Unread" and Google :)

I use a threaded view in Entourage, and simply skip to "next unread". If I
can't remember what was said, I read the rest of the thread. If I can't
remember the answer, I use Google.

Cheers

While not a MVP, I use newgroups for a long time. Hence I use a
newsgroup reader (now Mozilla Thunderbird). I don't use it as a
repository for research. Use groups.google.com for that. I save posts
that are particularly useful for future reference as a PDF in a folder
on the computer.

May or may not be best practice; but it's what I do.

Thank you. Helpful.

Do you save your own posts or again use Google for that?

Do you find that Google retains posts forever?

Thank you.

Norm,

My own posts by default (controlled by Thunderbird) go into my "Sent"
folder. Amongst other things, Thunderbird is designed for newsgroup
work, so it has most the bells and whistles.

It appears as if Google retains posts forever since they started. I
don't know if have anyone going back to grab older postings from archive
servers or something. Probably know. Who knows their plans for the future.

For this newgroup, per
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office.word/about,
it appears to go back to 2001.

Much the same as Rob Schneider - not an MVP, use Thunderbird (mainly) to
follow current threads, and Google Groups to research older stuff.

Thanks.

Do you find that Google follows all the microsoft groups like this one.
I could not get it to return any of my searches if a restricted it to
this newsgroup. Curious why not.... maybe I have the settings wrong but
I've tried 4 or 5 searches and it does not return a thing.

As Pete and Rob, I am not a MVP. Heck I am not even an Important
person, much less a MVP.
I first base on my experiences.
I save copies of all emails an newsgroup items I post, or post to. when
they get too cumbersome. I stuff them and eventually move them to a DVD.
and I research MS website or do Google search.

I'll try that group designation. I could not get any searches using just
the newsgroup name.

Appreciate the help.

I use a newsreader.
In the past, I was using MacSoup, which allows you to subscribe to
threads and auto-subscribes to threads you posted in.
I am now testing Unison 2 which doesn't have that, so tracking down
threads "of interest" is a bit more complicated, but the authors of
Unison say something is coming for thread subscription to I have hopes
:)

This newsgroup is at
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office.word/topics

To find this yourself, go to groups.google.com. in middle of what for
Google is a "busy" page, see "Explore Groups". Can search for groups,
e.g. "microsoft.public.mac.office.word". From there you can do various
things with the group list (see function buttons at right).

I also use this Google interface via my iPhone when travelling. Works,
but barely.

Norm,

My understanding is that Google follows thousands and thousands of
newsgroups for many years from now into the past. Probably terabytes of
material for you to explore. See groups.google.com, the section
"Explore Groups" and from there you can find groups by category.

If you want to search with more sophistication, on that same page see
link to "Advanced Groups Search" which takes you to
http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?q=&.

Enjoy.

I do find Google Groups quite frustrating at times, not least because I
can longer work out how I can restrict its searches to NNTP groups
rather than the numerous sites that feed off NNTP.

However, I have to assume that my frustration is no different from
anyone else's in the sense that the number of "hits" for any given
search term is inevitably very, very large these days.

Never: That's what Google is for :)

I might occasionally flag a thread in Entourage (say, once a year or so...)
if I know it's going to take me a couple of days to come up with the answer
and I need to get back to it.

Cheers

Anything older than five years is, by definition, "wrong" in computing, and
thus has a negative value.

Google lasts longer than that :)

Hi Phillip:

You're very important to ME.

You are a customer. You are the REASON I am here. Without you and others
like you, I would have nothing to do. I would have to find a new hobby.

You are much more important to me than I am to you.

You are also important to our "Community". You were here from the start.
Hell, you were here before I was... Whenever I think of "my friends in
m.p.m.o.Word" your face comes to mind.

Without people like you, this place would be just a "write-only" toxic soup
that would not attract any of the "stayers".

Phillip not important? Bloody nonsense: far more important than you perhaps
realise, mate.

Cheers

Thanks. I did what I call a normal search in Google Groups and using the
newsgroup name as a filter got zero. I guess I need to learn a bit more

Hmmm.... I'll have to check Google Groups more. I don't believe it has a
"read" / "unread" capability. For that and the simplicity of
presentation I like MT-NW but I have been "filing" posts of interest and
the procedure is not very efficient.
I might occasionally flag a thread in Entourage (say, once a year or so...)
if I know it's going to take me a couple of days to come up with the answer
and I need to get back to it.

Since I don't use Entourage, is a "flag" like marking it unread and it
will continue to present that post whenever you read the group?

Thanks.
