off-site adp

steel

Hi,
I am putting together a project for a client as follows:
1. Client HQ: SQL Server 2000 database + SQL Reporting Services
2. Client Site: ADP front-end --> SQL db (Client HQ)
3. ADP front-end --> URL link to Reporting db

My issue is due to the dial-up connection speed at the Client Site. I am
converting all adp Reports to SQL Reporting to help limit the size of the ADP
front-end. The ADP tables are linked to the Client HQ SQL db.

Is it best to use MSDE at Client Site and have MSDE and SQL Server
synchronise to help with download speeds - or is the solution I currently
have the best one?

Thank you.

Hello Steel,

I think it depends on if there is frequent update on the backend db. If the
update is not so frequently, the load of sync between MSDE and backend SQL
server bring less load.

In addition, it depends on how many users use the ADP client concurrently.
Since clients can query the same msde db on client side, Using SQL
replication could drop load of current access to HQ SQL server from
clients.

You have to balance these according to your own situation.

Peter,

Thanks for your reply - so quick!

To delve a little further. If the Clients @ Site are using different PC's
does one of them become the 'master' MSDE that links to the HQ db, while the
'slave' PC's link to the 'master'?

When the 'master' PC first loads the ADP project database the project links
to the HQ db to retrieve the objects (Tables, views, etc...). Can this object
structure be stored on the Client @ Site PC during installation of the ADP
project on their PC? So when the project is Opened the project looks to the
HQ db for changes only. Is this possible?

Thank you again.

Hello Alan,

Per you question, you may only configure a 'master' MSDE on client site
which replicates with HQ server. All other client ADP only uses this master
MSDE as if it is the server in HQ.

You may consider transactional r merged replication according to the
feature of the database you want. All the objects have the same copy in
both HQ and client site. Please refer to "Merge Replication or Updatable
Subscriptions" in SQL Books Online for more details.
