1. Is the rest of Office still installed on your computer?

2. Was Office preinstalled on your computer or did you purchase it
separately?

(My answer varies upon your response.)

Office is no longer installed.

I purchased a used Presario laptop (running win98se) that came with several
software cd's. Office and excel was installed at this time.

Ran into a problem with vmm32.vxd. Using the recovery cd seemed to be the
only option to restore the operating system. As a result all other programs
were lost.

I have the office software but not the case or the cd key.

How did you acquire your Office CDs? Did they come with another computer or
did you purchase them from a software vendor or the like?

The Presario was purchased at a local auction. There were several software
cd's included along with the loose (no case) office.

I believe Office2k key is generic to the version, so if you can find someone
else with same version.....
Unless you can provide proof of purchase (thats of Office, from a retailer)
I dont believe MS will help

Everything about the version would have to be exact for that to work.
Unfortunately the OP is pretty much out of luck. Microsoft will only help if
he had a receipt or the like for the software. Chances are it's an OEM
version and the only place to get help with that is the computer
manufacturer. Since is an old version that's no longer supported, that ship
has not only sailed but its about to be converted into an artificial reef.
