Office 2000 docs don't open properly...

M

Mark Hodgin

Help!!

I just replaced my ole' Windows 98 machine with a new XP. I loaded my copy
of Office 2000 on it. Install was fine and smooth. Many of my documents
created on the old machine open OK on the new computer, but many more do
not. They open all scrambled. There must be some settings somewhere that
need changing, or some add-on utility I'm missing in order to get these docs
to open and display properly.

Observation: It seems that the docs that don't respond proper may very
likely contain things like hyperlinks, charts, pictures, or html objects,
but not necessarily...

Anyone have suggestions on why some docs won't open correctly?

if the documents were properly copied to the new system, then the only
errors you should see would be due to missing references/links or templates.

however, the documents would not be "scrambled".
Please clarify what is meant by "scrambled".

Howard,

Thanks for responding.

When I say scrambled, I mean they look like this:

then either the documents were not copied correctly, or you have your open
settings to default to "Recover Text from Any File".

No, that doesn't seem to be the problem...All of the files were copied at
the same time to one CD-RW. Many of these files are fine, but others are
not. I wonder if not having Office 2000 SR-1a and/or SP-3 updates on the new
computer would make a difference?

I haven't installed these updates yet...

Ah, therein lies the problem.

You copied to CD-RW, not to hard disk or via a backup program.

Various versions of Nero and/or Roxio software have had issues with Word
files.
Other recording software might have/had similar problems.
First, I'd make sure that you have the latest version of whatever recording
software you are using, then I'd try again.
Most importantly, do not EVER manually remove a CD that has just been
recorded, have the recording software cleanup and eject, never do that
manually.

A more reliable way to move files is hook up an external USB drive, copy the
files, then , move the USB drive to the target computer.
