Office 2000 Help files- how do I permanently uncompress them?

We're running Office 2000, and every time a user opens up one of the Help
files, it must de-compress itself. That sometimes takes a few minutes.

I believe there is a way to permanently un-compress the Help files, so that
Help is instantly available. If somebody knows how, I'd appreciate the
assistance.

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

The help files for Office 2000 were .CHM (compiled HTML Help). They aren't the .HLP files from earlier versions that required the
search index to be built on first use. They use Internet Explorer's engine to display in the Help Panel in Office 2000.

It shouldn't take them 'minutes' to open, unless perhaps you're using Terminal Services and it's a network traffic issue. The
files, while not huge can be a bit heavy to send over.

Bob,

We're not using terminal services. But we are using Dell Pentium 4 PCs
acquired in 2003 with 512 MB of ram, running Windows 2000, LAN environment is
Novell/Microsoft. Typically when we launch help, the window will freeze for
at least two minutes. Our usual network traffic is fast. I know we don't
have the latest gear, and platform, but 1-2 minutes is ridiculous.
