Office 2000 not shutting down

Hello.

I am having a problem with my computer not shutting down.
When I select to shutdown the screen changes as if it is
going to shutdown but it gets stuck there. There is no
error message and I wound up shutting it down by the power
button on the front of the case. What could be causing
this to happen?
