Office 2000 OSB Problem

E

E/B

Multiple times daily I am presented a error window indicating a
component error in Office 2000 that wipes out my Desktop presentation
which displays my buttons across the top width of my monitor; have no
use for a Desktop display spread all over the monitor screen.
Within a max of 1 - 2 secs the OSB disappears. I can regenerate it from
a Quick Launch icon set up to 'get back' my bar.
Has anyone encountered a similar situation? I'm a non-tech user and
would like to resolve the problem if possible.
Suggestions?
Thanks

Hi E/B,

Have you tried repairing your Office installation? Is it fully updated? How do you know it's Office that's the *cause* of the
problem rather than merely happening to be the application that's getting caught up in some other issue with your system?

E

E/B

Yes, have uninstalled and reinstalled a couple times without success. It
is fully updated. Here is the 'error' I'm getting when the component
problem small window shows:

Microsoft Office 2000 Component

Error Signature

AppName: msoffice.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.2601 ModName:
kernel32.dll

ModVer: 5.1.2600.5781 Offset: 0000f02a

Can't 'prove' the Office to the the cause, but lacking tech knowledge I
look for all possibilities. BTW, other than uninstall/reinstall how do I
'repair'?

Hi E/B,

You can repair via Help|Detect & Repair from any Office 2000 application, or via Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel.
Repairing after an uninstall/reinstall isn't likely to improve things. Conversely, an uninstall/reinstall isn't likely to remedy
anything a repair doesn't fix.

Something else to check for is whether Microsoft's Office Live update has been installed on your system - it's incompatible with
Office 2000 and will have to be uninstalled before Office 2000 will work correctly.

Beyond that, see:
http://lounge.windowssecrets.com/index.php?showtopic=197827
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541
for various series of troubleshooting steps that will help you track down (and hopefully solve) the problem.

E

E/B

Checked Add/Remove in Ctl Panel and do not find MS Office Live (or
update). Also did a Search without any result so my conclusion is it
isn't installed.
OSB comes and goes - needs to close sometimes if I just place the
pointer on it, or try to open one of the items in the Desktop toolbar,
etc. And sometimes the result of reopening the OSB is the appearance of
a ? iconon the button representing MS Word icon, or the addition of an
extra blank button.
I now keep an icon on the quick launch bar so relaunching isn't a chase
thru Start, etc.
Frustrating.

OSB2000 continues to be afflicted with frequent, unexpected closures
which show:

"Following is the error detail provided for the Microsoft Office 2000
Component error that causes the shortcut bar to close when the error
message is closed:

AppName: msoffice.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.2601 ModName:
msoffice.exe

ModVer: 9.0.0.2601 Offset: 0000737c

The Component Error window continues to be experienced even after new
hard drive installed at end of July 2009."

Additionally and currently the icons presented when the OSB is
re-opened defy credulity. At this moment there are five ? - one is
correct for a talking program for legally-blind wife ("Cptr Speak")
while the others now represent My Docs, IrfanView, ScanSuite, and a
shortcut used by wife to open email send form (and placed at extreme
right end of monitor screen). ((OSB is displayed across the top of the
monitor)). Also the 6 envelope icons presented for wife's 'open OE6 send
email form' are now displayed as an IE6 icon, a Firefox icon, a ?, an
icon designating her EccentricViewing practice aid, and two correct
'open email send' forms.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the random icons. Right now the
My Networks Place icon is representing the Recycle Bin, the Recycle Bin
icon represents My Downloads, and the mess continues. Matter
particularly frustrating as wife depends on correct icons being in
correct location.

Closing and reopening OSB normally will bring a 'shuffle' of the icons
presented with a correct display 1 of 10/15 tries. MS Office 2000
uninstall/reinstall and a variety of repair suggestions have been tried
without success.

Sorry for the length of this tirade, but it is really frustrating.
Any/all suggestions (other than 'dump it') are accepted!!

Kind of a wild guess, but do an explorer search for IconCache.db

Under Windows XP it's in c:\Documents and Settings\username\Local
Settings\Application Data

It'll be a hidden file. Copy it to another folder or your desktop, then
delete the original and restart the PC.

Another possibility is to rightclick the desktop, change your Settings from
32-bit to, say, 16-bit color. Restart the PC. Then switch it back and
restart again.
