Office 2000 SB on new XP, can't read documents

I have Microsoft Office 2000 SBE and I installed it on my new PC running XP Media Center Edition. I downloaded all the updates and security patches, but about half of my documents (off my old computer running ME, with the same MS Office 2000 SBE) are not readable. They prompt me to convert the code and I choose Western Euro English, but all that comes up is sqares and symbols. Some other docs view just fine. Any suggestions out there?
