Office 2000 SR-1a update fails

RetiredTech

After a hard drive failure and a re-installation of the OS (Windows XP pro
with SP3 and all the recent updates) I tried installing Office 2000.
Installation went fine but when I tried the SR-1a update (required before
Office 2000 SP3) I get the following error:
Error: The file,
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\sr1patch\{0DC0F122-1B1C-11D4-AED6-00C04F022C53}, has an invalid size.
Error: The Office 2000 SR-1 Core Update patch is missing or invalid.
Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 setup ended prematurely because of an error.

After searching the web, several people reported this back in 2004 but there
were no fixes listed on any site. Any help would be appreciated.

Had an argument not so long ago with an OP who claimed that to install SR-1a to
Office 2000 you do not need SR-1 installed.

You need SR-1 installed before SR1a will install without issues

Thanks for the quick reply, Peter!
I looked on the Microsoft Office Updates website and they only offer SR-1a.
According to the information, that release also includes the SR-1 data and
also an update to the Registry to correct other problems.
One of the older posts on the web also indicated that you can fix my invalid
size problem by using the CD version of the updates. However, they are no
longer offered on CD for Office 2000.
Do you know where I can find an old copy of SR-1 to try out your theory?

My guess on this problem is that Microsoft made some change recently and the
installation is supposed to check for correct download file size but someone
forgot to change it to the new value. I completed this same update for
another person about 3 months ago and it worked just fine on their computer.

Peter,
I just reviewed the previous month's posts and found a similar post to mine
from 7-15-09.
Your final response on how to fix the problem worked for me also. The first
suggestion on downloading the SR-1 fix from the following web site is the key
solution:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258323/
Further in this article it says:
Point your Web browser to the following address:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/appndx/toolbox.htm#o2sr1au
That page has moved and gives the following one instead:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ork2000/HA101693191033.aspx
Choose "Office 2000 Resource Kit downloads" and then, about 3/4 way down the
list of options, choose:
Office 2000 SR-1 administrator updates - updated May 12, 2000
Choose the following file for download: O2ksr1adl.exe
That is the file that really works for an update for SR-1.
Follow the instructions from the first page and store the files on
c:\FullSr1 when prompted for an expansion location. Start with the Setup.exe
program in that folder and you are golden! The update works perfectly!
I then immediately completed Office SP3 update as well.

Thanks so much for your help, Peter. I hope other people read this post
while searching for the solution

:

RetiredTech and Peter,
This sequence worked well for me also, thank you. I had a hard drive failure
like RetiredTech and had to re-install the Office 2000 Premium version. I
successfully updated to service pack 3 following RetiredTech's instructions.
Do either of you know if there are any updates that need to be applied after
SP3? There may be quite a few security updates that should still be
installed.

It looks like your solution is just what I needed. But when I attempted the
download ofO2ksr1adl.exe, I was blocked? I was on my PC as the admin, etc.
Any Suggestions?

I can download that file, but of course that was the one that cause the
original problem. When you run the *.exe, you get the errors:

Error: The file,
C:\Users\HOOPAM~1\AppData\Local\Temp\sr1patch\{0DC0F122-1B1C-11D4-AED6-00C04F022C53}, has an invalid size.
Error: The Office 2000 SR-1 Core Update patch is missing or invalid.

Seems as though I need the file [O2ksr1adl.exe]. I would use MS support,
but according to the web site, Office 2000 is no longer supported.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Is SR-1 installed? Not SR1a but SR-1

I am also having trouble installing Office 2000 SR-1a. I was attempting to
download the Office 2000 SR-1 update following the instructions below and it
appears the file is no longer available at the specified location. When I
attempt to save the O2ksr1adl.exe, I get the following --

IE can not download O2ksr1adl.exe from download.microsoft.com.

IE is not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either
unavailable or can not be found. Please try again later.

Is this file available elsewhere?

SandyR and others,
I believe that Microsoft thinks that SR-1a is a good replacement for SR-1
and that it works correctly. As Peter pointed out, it definitely does NOT
work and we need SR1 to correctly update to SP3. My hope is that this thread
will someday get monitored by someone at Microsoft that will actually listen
to the end users and test the SR-1a to find that it comes up with errors. I
have given up trying to change Microsoft's mind on many things.
If any of you have a good free FTP site, I would gladly send the 55 MB SR-1
update to you via FTP. It is just too large to attach to an email.
Email me at "(e-mail address removed)" with instructions for your FTP site.

I can't help but believe MS is evil and does not want us to be able to keep
Office2000 current.
They have removed the longer file from their site and the short file doesn't
work anymore.

If you do a google search for ""o2ksr1adl.exe download" you should be able
to find it.

Also, check out some other discussions on this recently on this site
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...85a-a8a4-4c3f-ada9-fb3986d25469&lang=en&cr=US

Any requests for help from MS volunteers on this site result in answers that
don't help.
(eg :did you install SR-1 first? A helpful answer would tell us how to do
that!)

One alternative I'm seriously considering for replacement computers is
OpenOffice at OpenOffice.org
It will read and write .doc .xls and .ppt files just fine.... and without
all the BS

Wouldn't this thread be more appropriately posted on Office Update as MS
Update doesn't do Windows2000 ??

I donwloaded and installed SR-1 not SR-1a. When installing I receive an error
claiming it cannot update one of the tmp files (PT6B.tmp) Retry does not
complete the update so I click ignore with does complete. Next tried sr-1a
with does not update Office. SR-2 is next with the same erros as SR-1
although a different filename. Checking Help, About does not have SR-2. Any
ideas? I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times as well.
Thanks ,
Greg

This is the same problem everyone has. This thread keeps coming up (See
Office Updates of 8/25).

Here's the answer (cut&pasted from there) which does work, but you may have
to be persistent to track down the one file you need:

"The small file doesn't work.... and the large file that you need is no
longer available from Microsoft.
If you do a google search for "O2KSR1aDL.exe download", you can find some
sites that still have it.
It works just fine as I just used it."

I too had to try and update Office 2000 as I built a new computer. I
did copy the CD's (I have some extra stuff so had a disc 1 and disc 2)
to the hard drive and when I tried to update, no go.

Peter Lynch has a nice blog entry which explains a fudge factor that
seems to work. I tried it just to see if I could at least get the
disc1 portion updated and it worked like a champ. Ultimately though I
did have to download O2KSR1aDL.exe as I have the disc 2.

I see some posts don't seem to have the URL listed so in case mine
don't take, google +"peter lynch" +sr1 and it should be the first hit.
For O2KSR1aDL.exe I downloaded it off the 4shared site.
