Office 2000 sudden problem

Suddenly, no Office 2000 premium programmes will open and
run. I think the software I have is OEM but I can't report
the problem directly as to find the product ID number I'd
have to open one of the programmes, which I can't. I'm
getting this message if I try to open from a link or
document: "The Windows Installer failed to install the
program associated with this file. Please contact your
system administrator." and this one if I try to open
the .exe file e.g. excel.exe or winword.exe "This
application must be installed to run. Please run Setup
from the location where you originally installed the
application." I can't find the quick repair disc. Is this
the result of some known virus? Can I fix it without a CD?
Any idea what has happened? I use Windows 98.

Hi - had a similar problem recently. The fix was to
install the latest Service pack for the version of windows
you are running. Somehow you have lost the Windows
Installer files which are needed to install office and the
likes. Try downloading latest service pack and try from
there.

Thanks for your suggestion. I've tried this and also all
the latest windows installer updates but still have the
same problem. I have my hard drive backed up from a little
while ago before this staretd and have tried restoring
almost all of it but that hasn't worked either. Does
anyone know where the damaged files are kept so that I can
look for those specifically on the backup?
