Thanks. I guess I'm hoping that whatever Microsoft wants to charge me
$35 for is a piece of information (a key code, a patch to download or
some other way to type in something that will make the two programs
recognize each other) rather than a CD or something else they'd have to
send me.

I'd be afraid your $35 might buy you the same information you've already
received here.

I did a search of Google groups and found nothing that hasn't already been
discussed here.

The only possible solution might be to acquire an older version of MS Works
from some source such as ebay and use it as the software to upgrade to Office
2000. You wouldn't need to install it, just insert the CD when Office 2000
asks for it but since OO is working for you, there's no reason to do that.

I did find one copy of Works 4.5 on ebay for $9.99 with $4.30 postage, that's
cheaper than paying the support charge... ;-)

Ok are you sure that there is not a CD or floppy extraction
programme built into the original re installation disks that
you have.

Some OEM versions I have ended up with allowed for the
included software to be extracted to my media

I probably lost a few years as well :)

After furious head scratching, Joanne asked:

| Milly,
|
| No, that article didn't come up with my search. I was given that
| information by the polite Indian lady who answered my call to the 800
| number. When I posted here, I was hoping to find fellow users who had
| had this problem, and had gotten the top secret information before
| the life cycle of Office had expired. Since they gave the
| information for free until June 2004, somebody here must have been
| given the information and be willing to pass it on.
|
| Are you willing to try to help me or are you just trying to defend
| Microsoft against li'l ol' me? My contention is that this
| informaiton exists, and that between 2000 and 2004 a great many users
| received that information.
|
| I would like to post a new question looking for users who know how to
| do what I need to do. If you'd let me post that question without
| loading it down with criticisms of my intelligence, I would really
| appreciate it. If not, let me know here, and I'll just go back to
| using Open Office and not give Microsoft Office a backward glance.

|| After furious head scratching, Joanne asked:
||
||| Geoff,
|||
||| I read all the documentation, including the Knowledge Base article I
||| copied into this thread. It clearly states that there is a fix and
||| that technical support has that fix. Nowhere does it say I'd have
||| to pay for the fix. I own a legally purchased copy of all the
||| software involved, but because of a hard drive failure I had to
||| reinstall the software. Microsoft has failed to support its own
||| software, and has failed to live up to the promises of their own
||| Knowledge Base.
|||
||| I came here for information, and find myself surrounded by dense
||| (intentionally or unintentionally) Microsoft cheerleaders who would
||| rather berate a user than offer help. Their only reply to any
||| question seems to be to pay Microsoft and shut up. Well, I'm
||| choosing to shut up now.
|||
||| It was childish of me to respond in kind to Millie's nasty response
||| to my original post. I apologize for falling to her level. This
||| conversation has gone from useless to incredibly annoying, so I
||| think I'll bow out now.

||||
|||| I dislike aspects of MS myself, but try not to blame them

||||
|||| I am sure that MS is happy as well, and am sure that
|||| openoffice will provide you with all the support you need.
