Is Office 2001 compatible with OS10.3? If not, is there a way to
upgrade to the latest version without having to outright buy the new
Office package?

It's compatible in the sense that it will run in OS 10.3's Classic
environment. Office v.X and Office 2004 run natively in OS X.

You can upgrade to Office 2004 from Office 2001 for a reduced price. See
