Office 2002 hangs during auto send/receive

I am using Office 2002 XP Professional and whenever I set
automatic send/receive on, it freezes the machine. I
have to stop it using Task Manager and reboot. When I
turn auto send/receive off, it works fine and I can do
manual send/receives.

any suggestions?
