Office 2003 application startup altered after VB Express installat

I just installed Visual Basic Express on my PC (without SQL Server, etc.).
Now, when I start Excel and Word, the Windows installer tries several times
to install "Visual Basic Express ENU". If I don't cancel it, the
"installation" proceeds, and not very speedily. Then the installation
restarts itself again--a total of three times in Excel (most annoying). Does
anyone know what I did wrong when I installed Visual Basic Express to cause
my MS Office suite configuration to get messed up, and how I might correct
the situation? Thanks! (P.S. I am running Windows XP SP2 and Office 2003
Professional Enterprise Edition.)
