Office 2003 Defaults

Everytime I set defaults in any Office 2003 program, the defaults won't
"stick". Each time the program is reopened, I have to start from scratch all
over again. How can I get my defaults to stay?

Which Office 2003 program (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.)? Defaults for what?
How are you setting those defaults?

It use Word/ Excel predominantly so this is where I have been encountering
the problem. It is the font/margins/toolbars. When I change the font/margin I
click the "default" button and get the message asking if I really want to
change the default and say yes.

I tried changing the "normal.doc" file name but it still keeps reverting. I
also tried uninstalling and reinstalling hoping that would miraculously fix
it.
