Office 2003 Documents Becoming Read Only

P

Pedro

We are getting users across the organisation that will be editing
their documents just fine and then go to save and the doc or
spreadsheet comes up as read only and they have to save the file
somewhere else and move it back to overwrite the original. This is
happening in Office 2003 and we also still have some users with Office
XP and it also happens for them.

It only happens on one share on one server in the organisation which
happens to be the main repository for files. I have disabled offline
files for this share and it still happens. It happens to domain
admins as well as regular users. I tried rebooting into Safe mode
with Networking and the problem still exists. This would rule out
things like Desktop Search or AV on the client.

Server is 2003 SP2 and clients are XP SP2.

Hi Pedro,

Do the users have full read/write/delete access to the temporary and temporary internet file locations as well as the locations
where the documents are stored?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/277867

Check the documents, templates and temp locations for any left over temp or owner/lock files by searching on
~$*.*;*.tmp

Bob, yes the users have full access. Users can edit files just fine
most of the time and in fact can be working on a document (or
spreadsheet) for several hours and saving but all of a sudden they go
to save it and instead it prompts with the Save As dialog and the
title says (Read Only) after the document name.

Even as an administrator, I can replicate the problem.

I have cleaned out all temporary files on the server and PC with that
type of file name but it still happens.

Thanks for the feedback.
