Office 2003 encountered a problem and needs to close; insert pictu

When I try to insert a picture (and sometimes an object) Word either closes
with no warning or displays the message that Word has encountered a problem
and needs to close. I'm running Windows XP and Office XP and both are up to
date with all upgrades or Service Packs.

When I try to insert a picture from a file or when I try to open any
documents with embedded pictures, the following programs crash: Word, Excel,
Powerpoint, Publisher and MS Office Picture manager. Also the crash occurs
when I try to open documents with graphics. What happens is this: I open a
document with graphics and a dialogue box opens that says: Microsoft Office
program has encountered a problem and needs to close. An error report is
generated and I send it to MicroSoft. Document Recovery tries to recover the
document and the error message and recovery repeat over and over and over and
over until I quite MS Office.

Example technical reports from the Event Logs are:

faulting module gdiplus.dll, version 6.0.3275.0, stamp 42cad9ef, debug? 0,

I installed SP2 as soon as it came out. I have all updates, critical and
recommended installed. I’ve used Detect and Repair, Scan Disk and have even
uninstalled and reinstalled the program. I daily scan for viruses, spyware
etc.

Physian heal theyself:

The problem is described in KB912022. Microsoft has a hotfix for the problem
but has not released it yet. Microsoft offers the Hotfix on a no-charge basis
but the only way to get it is to pay U$35.00 to a Microsoft Support
Professional on a Pay-Per-Incident basis to resolve this issue. Microsoft
says, “Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we
recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Office 2003 service pack that
contains this hotfix."

So any suggestions? Do I just have to deal with this lemon error or pay the
U$35.00?

Today Microsoft customer service suggested that I pay.

If it is determined that you need the hotfix, you will not be charged for
the service call provided you do not introduce any other support issues.
