Office 2003 file location/save in not working

I have office 2003 installed on a dell optiplex using win
xp pro as the o/s. When I try to change the directory
(save in) to which I want to save a document the program
hangs up and requires a shut down. File locations can be
changed utilizing the "my computer" browsing function but
the "save in" feature does not work. The "up one
directory" icon also does not work. When the machine
hangs up two instances of word appear in the task list
with both cited as "not responding". Any help will be
appreciated.
