Office 2003 files locked

After about a month of use all new and existing office documents are now
locked:
Word says "this modification is not allowed because the document is locked";
files in the other programs just can't be modified.

Help - Activate Product does nothing (so not a licence problem?); Tools -
Protect Document is disabled.

Office 2003 & Windows XP OS both up-to-date. Unistall & Reinstall does not
clear the problem. Up-to-date virus scan (McAfee) with most sophisticated
settings isn't finding anything. Can transfer files to another machine with
2003 and work OK.

Any ideas?!

thanks

Nathan

Did you activate? Just because the screen doesn't appear means nothing. When
I click 'activate' under Help, I see a box with "this product has already
been activated".

thanks for the response

Can't remember whether I clicked on Help - Activate Product before, I assume
Office was activated as I did a full install of a full legit copy. Did an
identical install on my laptop, and on that Help - Activate Product brings up
the "already activated" message.

On the desktop (on which Office has reduced its functionality) a click on
Help - Activate Product produces no response at all. If I didn't activate
shouldn't it be offering to allow me to do so now? at least shouldn't the
uninstall and reinstall have allowed me to activate?

After a lot of frustration (why doesn't it give a message or warning about
WHY it's decided to reduce functionality?) the most likely possibility now
seems to me to be that the IT people at work have installed the copy they
gave me on a PC at work already - so 'using up' one of the 2 installations
I'm allowed under the EULA.
I will try to find out before taking this further.
