OFFICE 2003 - ful license upgrade

I run windows xp professional and have office xp, an
upgrade of office 97. I have tried tyo set up office 2003
but when eentering the product key number the screen
either freezes or or the dialog box dissapears. I have
tried to detect and repair office xp but I cannot I get
error message saying: Installer termianted - the I/O
operation has been aborted.
Can anyone help
