Office 2003 MUI Service Packs...

J

Jay

Hi all...

I'm currently working on a deployment project with office 2003 MUI...
In the documenting phase i'm still stuck with a number of unanswered
questions...

1 - One language pack included in the original 6CD set (2068 Norwegian
(Nynorsk)) is NOT documented in the LCID detailed list
(http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011402211033.aspx), and there
is no update in the MUI SP1 for it...

Is this language pack still supported and will it be updated in the future
release of MUI SP2 ?

2 - Office 2003 MUI SP1 Detailed info
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=843187) shows Muisp1_chpff.msp Chinese
(Hong Kong) as being available in the SP1 while it appears to be missing in
the packages... Also Chinese (Honk Kong) seems to be undocumented in the LCID
list.

Is this an error or is there a Chinese (Hong Kong) Language pack available ?

3 - Office 2003 MUI SP1 doesn't include updates for the following language
packs originaly included in the source CD (1027 1039 1057 1066 1069 1094 1095
1097 1098 1099 1102 1106 110 2068 2108)...

Are those language packsnot supported anymore and if they still are is there
a SP1 Update for them and/or a SP2 update scheduled ?

4 - Office 2003 Proofing tools SP2 and Office 2003 SP2 have been released
but still no news of Office 2003 MUI SP2...

Are there links to any info relating to MUI SP2's release date and/or
content available that i might have missed ?

Many txs in advance for ANY help relating to those topics...

Norwegian Nynorsk was released in one of the CD's but is not a MUI, it's
actually a Language Interface Pack, check out this page

Not sure what you mean here, I didn't find any CHP MUI patch on the link you
mentioned. I don't believe it was released in the 6CD set, I'll look into
this.

Catalan 1027
Icelandic 1039
Indonesian 1057
Vietnamese 1066
Basque 1069...

These were included in the MUI CD Pack but are actually supported as
Language Interface Packs. Not all these languages had a SP1 released for
them, here's more info

SP2 for MUI was released on Oct. 18th as you should already have noticed.

Ok... I had noticed most of the languages i was referencing in my previous
post (if not all) were supported as LIPs but was not sure of the difference...

? - Am I right to think that MUIs are an Integrated Language Functionality
developped by Microsoft only as opposed to LIPs that would be Layer added
Language Functionality developped in collaboration with other IT communities
like Governments ?

? - What is the future of MUI vs LIP ? Are these 2 lines of products going
to merge at one point ?

Yes.... at last.... lol... (Patience is the mother of virtues... ;p)

Once again thanks for your answers...

Did some research into this. There was a "CHP MUI" product released but it
only consisted of CHS and ENG MUI products bundled together, so logically
there is no CHP MUI SP2.

A MUI contains all localized files and gets installed on top of English
Office. So a person installing the German MUI on English Office will see
100% of the UI in German (when they toggle over to German).
A LIP contains only a subset of the most used binaries. And LIP gets
installed on top of a specific parent language version of Office. For
example, Catalan has Spanish as its parent language. When the user toggles
to Catalan, they will see mostly Catalan, but some of the UI will still show
up in Spanish.
Generally, MUI languages have many more users and LIP languages are for
languages with fewer speakers.
For the next version of Office I believe the structure will be changed, but
can't comment on specifics. For Office 2003 the MUI/LIP schema will remain.
Yes.... at last.... lol... (Patience is the mother of virtues... ;p)

Once again thanks for your answers...

Hope this helps. I was surprised there wasn't more documentation available
on these subjects. I've forwarded your concerns to change that.
