Office 2003 Outlook Sound Problem

When I set the sound function for "New Mail Notification"
in the control panel the sound will not play when new
messages arrive in Outlook. Anyone else run into this
problem?

System is:

Window XP Pro SP1
MSOffice 2003

Does audio function in general work well? That means can you hear other
sounds or music?
