Office 2003 Pro ServicePacks after XP SP3

Hi Guys,
I have Office 2003 Pro for ages.
A week after installing XP SP3 the notification came about Office SP3.
Installation of all 6 patches failed including Word viewer 2003 (SP1)
No reasons were given.
After several attempts to install including standalone SP3 failed.
I disabled notifications coming back.
Then SP2 notification came (9 patches) - failed - disabled
SP1 (5 patches) - failed - disabled
now very old patches are coming one by one.

First of all why? I was pretty sure I had sp2 installed.
And what can be done if I don't have the CD? Office was preinstalled when PC
was purchased > 4 years ago

Thanks in advance

I am having the same problem. On a new PC with Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3
installed and a new install of Office 2007 Professional none of the updates
or Service Packs for Office 2007 will install. So far there are 10 or 11
updates. They download but will not install.

Here is the temporary solution to the inability of Microsoft Update or
Automatic Updates installation failure of updates.

Solution: See KB946691

1. Download and Install KB946691

2. Manually Download and install the Office 2007 Service Pack 1 Update

3. Reboot the system

4. Manually download and install individually the remaining updates
KB931906, KB946983, KB947801, KB946974, KB950114, KB950378, KB950113,
KB951808.

5. After downloading and installing all the above reboot the system.

If you now run Microsoft Update you will now see that there are no more
additional updates to be installed.

You can also look at the Windows Control Panel / Add Programs -- System
Updates
and see that they have been installed.

6. This does not solve the problem of why Microsoft Update or Automatic
Updates for Office after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 or when running
under Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3 does not allow installation updates to
complete.

But it does at least allow one to install the updates manually and proceed
with the use of their Office 2003 and Window System.

Hi Cole,
Thank you for reply.
Is it any chance to post the source of this info.
First I have to be sure that it applies to Office 2003 Pro.
Secondly I am interested in knowing the cause of a problem.
For example if it is Registry screwed up it can be a solution to solve
subsequent Auto-Updates too.
In addition I may find those entries in reg backups if that is a problem
or
as MS often do: they change Permissions themselves, for example and then
forgetting about it.
Thanks again
Take care

I have found if you re-register the following dll's, updates will start
working again.

wuapi.dll
wuaueng1.dll
wuaueng.dll
wucltui.dll
wups2.dll
wups.dll
wuweb.dll

To answer more of your questions...

It appears to me that XP SP3 has broken something with automatic updates. I
don't have a definite answer, but I presume it has something to do with the
way SP3 is applied to the system. You know how sometimes when you try to
update a piece of software and it will ask for the original installation
source?

I have found (after 16 desktop and 6 laptop installs) that once XP SP3 is
applied NO updates can be installed. This is either through the Microsoft
Update website, or with automatic updates turned on. Once you re-register
the previously listed dll's, everything starts working again. I have created
a batch file that I run on each machine after SP3 is installed, and I haven't
had any problems since then.

Hi izgoi,

Thanks for reply I am happy for you that what you suggested worked there.
But it didn't here :-(
I think that something more serious is broken.
Well I was wondering why even free Word Viewer patch 950625 fails?
so I tried again with your trick and standalone patch. No way.
Went to add/remove and fired up Reinstall / Repair ... Failed that too!!!
It means that if I would uninstall (which sure would work, I have no doubts
about that)
the subsequent Installation will fail and I will loose the viewer.

OK i'll wait a bit ... It seams like MS is pretty silent about it.
Open Office is already here (fullversion on PC and Portable version on 40GB
mp3 player) ...
so "Good by MS Office" coming soon
I am not going to keep it without security patches
My regards
