Office 2003 SP1 won't install: SKU011.CAB missing

B

Bill Bailey

I am experiencing the same problem described by many others here: Office 2003 SP1 will not install because it's looking for a file, SKU011.CAB, that does NOT exist on my original installation CD. I've tried all of the remedies suggested: running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, downloading the "full file" installation packages, running detect and repair, etc. NONE of these things work! Can someone tell me what Office 2003 CD actually contains the file SKU011.CAB? It is not on my Office 2003 PRO CD.

Hi Bill,

The problem you and other people are encountering is due to the Local
Installation Source introduced with Office 2003. The local cache is
supposed to avoid source media requests by caching cab files containing the
product files on the local drive. This means that when an update is applied
and the source is needed the cache is used instead of prompting the user for
the source media. This works great until the cache folder somehow becomes
corrupted and a cab file cannot be found. This causes a request for source
to copy the necessary cab files down to the local installation cache in
order for the update installation to continue.

In your case the SKU011.cab file should reside in the Office 2003
Professional CD. Please ensure that your CD contains PRO11.MSI. If it
doesn't contain the PRO11.MSI then the wrong media is being used and the
needed file won't be on the CD. Please ensure that your CD contains
PRO11.MSI in it and double-check for SKU011.cab after showing hidden/system
files.

Please reply back to the group with information on your CD and we can work
on this to see what else may be causing your problem.

More information regarding the Local Installation Source and tool can be

I am using the cd from which I installed 2003 Office, and
I even ran the option to repair damaged components in case
that would help. However, I still get asked for SKU011.cab
which it cannot find and which is not on my CD. Following
the email instructions below I looked for PRO11.MSI and
that does not seem to exist on this CD either(?)

How do I run the update when all the files that seem to be
needed don't exist on the CD?

Hi, Gary,

Do you have any other Office family products installed, such as FrontPage,
or Publisher? Or Word that came with Works? Check your Windows Control
Panel to see if there are any others installed. You might try to supply
those CDs when prompted.

No I don't have anything like that installed as far as I
can tell. I did upgrade from 2002 Office to 2003 a while
back, and I just re-ran the Office 2003 install to see if
that would help but same thing happens (i.e. it asks for
sku011.cab).

This file is on the 'Microsoft Office Professional Enterprise Edition 2003'.
It sounds as if you're inserting a retail CD (which will have a different
set of files). The main difference is that the Enterprise product includes
InfoPath. Do you have InfoPath installed? The Retail product CD will have
a file named SKU111.CAB on it.

You said "...Do you have InfoPath installed? The Retail
product CD will have a file named SKU111.CAB on it."

I do have SKU111.cab so what does that mean to using the
update?

I don't think I have InfoPath; is that on the Office CD?

It's possible you have multiple Office 2003 products installed with
overlapping applications. That can confuse things. When you look in
'Windows|Add/Remove Programs', what Office 2003 products do you see listed?

InfoPath is on the Office Pro Enterprise 2003 CD, but not on the Office Pro
2003 CD.

I'm a little lost regarding your specific problem. Can you reply with the
details? If you're seeing the prompt for a needed xxxx.CAB file, then
inserting the CD should solve your problem.

Bill, based on the information you have provided, the product installed on
your computer does not match the CD you have. The CD that you have is
'Office Professional 2003', and the file being requested is on the 'Office
Professional Enterprise 2003' CD.

I think the simplest solution for you is to uninstall Microsoft Office, and
then install again from the CD that you have. Then you should not have any
further problems updating Office.

I will communicate your problem to a contact I have in OEM Support to see if
Dell is aware of this mismatch.

I fixed my problem. The update from the office update prompting me for the
CD and asking for file"#%".

The PRO11.MSI wouldn't work. I downloaded the full install files and
updated with no problems.

However, outlook still keeps crashing and restarting!

K2--

You didn't say whether Outlook began crashing and restarting before or after
you installed SP1, but I would go to Event Viewer typing in "eventvwr.msc"
in the run box and going to Application and click on it and see what errors
might be there at the time of the Outlook crash and I'd post it on the
Outlook group at microsoft.public.outlook where the Outlook experts hang.

Best,

Chad Harris

Bill, I've communicated your product mismatch to our OEM Support folks, and
they'd like some additional information. Can you send me a direct email
(mailto:[email protected] - remove the '.online' to send the
email) with your Service Tag information and contact information so that
Dell can follow up?
