Office 2003 SP2 fails to download, all attempts have corrupted fil

I have been trying to apply Office 2003 SP1 on a clean install of
WinXPpro/Office 2003.
All attempts have resulted in failures due to corrupted download files. I
have used Office Update, and also downloaded the manual install files (both
for with(50M) and without(100M) install disk). I have tried manual extraction
( /c) on all manual download files. I have downloaded on three different XP
PCs in my network. All downloads have been corrupted and unusable. I have
tried downloading in various ways a couple of dozen times, or more, over the
past two days.
I have a SBC -DSL connection, and a LinkSys WRT54G router (with latest
firmware applied). I do occasionally get corrupted downloads from other
sites, but usually I can get them downloaded OK after one or two attempts.
There are no error messages except for the Office Update wizard saying the
Automatic update failed, try again.
I have turned off the Virus software (AVG), and turned of the Windows
Firewall. I have fiddled with the Page file as suggested by the Office Update
Wizard when it notifies me of the failed install attempt.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

And what is the error that is generated on your attempts and also in Event Viewer. Can you post it per verbatim.

Peter,
I'm also having the same problem with Office 2003 SP2.
I just found out that I can't do a "Repair and Detect"; nor can I unistall
Office 2003. I first had a problem when Microsoft Updates couldn't install
any of the updates for Office 2003 SP2. I keep getting the same message
"Installation Failed".

Can you go to the Event Viewer and see if you have a ID 1603 error on MCInstaller. Post back with answer please

When I run MS Office Update Wizard on any computer in my office network, the
update nearly always fails with the message "Installation unsucessfull". This
occurs in the browser popup window for the Update Wizard, Step 3 of 3.
I just ran 3 attempts to update oneNote on my primary desktop. The Event
Viewer/Application Log reported the following:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( OfficeUpdateV3 ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able
to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and
Support for details. The following information is part of the event:
V3_2|512287|INSTALL|ONENOTESP2_7969_ENG||2005-10-24
12:23:51|9|FAIL|00000000|The operation completed successfully.

When I do a manual download, then execute the file manualy (e.g.,
c:\...\Office2003SP2 /c), I first see a Open File - Security Warning dialog
box that tells me the "Publisher cannot be verified. Are you sure you want to
run this file?" The publisher is listed as Unknown Publisher. Then when I say
yes, and select a place to extract the files to, the extraction fails at some
point with the following error message: "Extracting file failed. It is most
likely caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file) or a corrupted
Cabinet file."
I do not have low disk space on any of the PCs I have used. Also, multiple
manual downloaded files fail at different points in Cab extraction, so it is
not the same compressed file being corrupted on each download, but, there is
always something corrupted.

Interestingly, when I took the PC I was upgrading back to my customer two
days ago, I was able to run the update from her office internet connection,
no problem, first try. So, the problem may be partly with my ISP connection.
However, I am wondering now what is going on in the browser download function
that allows files to to be transfered without checking the file integrity
during a file transfer. Shouldn't the browser be doing a checksum or
something to verify the transfer? Is there a more reliable method of doing a
manual download from Microsoft than using IE?

Thanks, David Jonathan
