Office 2003 Standard version

I upgraded old C: drive to new C: drive and most features seem to be
running OK but applications in Start > Microsoft Office have lost
identifying icons and appear as blank squares.

When starting Word it will try to install then an error message appears
about missing patch. Word starts OK and seems to run fine. Similarly
workflow with Excel.

Word is also installed as part of Works Suite.

I tried Office update and it seemed to detect missing patches:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/FX010404541033.aspx

Trying to repair from Word or Excel at some stage gives rise to the
following message:

<quote>
Add or Remove Programs

This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package.
</unquote>

Trying to remove Office 2003 gives rise to same error message as quoted
above.

Trying to re-install from Office 2003 CD gives rise to same message

In a nutshell, the program neither appears to want to repair nor
uninstall (same error message about patch package)

Any help, guidance or prompts gratefully received
