office 2003 update failure - no MSP files

P

pcbs

Help!!!! My office update has stopped, when I go thru windows update the
files fail to install, when i go to office update it says "no windows
installer patch files" no office program will detect and repair, it just says
failed application, running the 2003 disc, it terminates after the
verification initiallisation on a fresh install, throwing up the generic
windows reporting message and terminates. I go to windows update again and no
updates are found yet I know they failed to come and install (not hidden
either). I have a registered key'd copy. Windows installer 3.0.
Does anybody know how I can trip these missing files into gear again??

Hi, downloaded that installer - no joy. I'm still getting the below from the
office update page;

"The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer.
This may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office
Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try
running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If
the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows
Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information
see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if
Unavailable. "

If I click on the detect and repair tam, the windows installer box runs then
another box pops up stating "This package cant be opened, verify the path
exists etc...."

Am at a loss, I've used the Windows install cleanup, but when trying to
reinstall it takes half the verification then , thats when I get the generic
microsoft error report and it closes.

Are either of these going to asist me?? The 2003 resource kit download or
the Remove Hidden Data tool??

You receive the "This patch package could not be opened" error message in an Office
program
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;295823

Shut down the Windows Installer service and then re-register it. This makes sure that
the Windows Installer engine functions properly. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msiexec /unreg, and then click OK.
3. When this process is complete, click Start, and then click Run.
4. In the Open box, type msiexec /regserver, and then click OK.
5. When this process is complete, try again.

If you want to go through the pain, that's up to you. We've all had to do it at some
stage when problems (more than just one) occur.
