Office 2003 Update "Unsuccessful"

I installed office 2003 and have chosen the update option which shows m
the need to download and install "Office 2003 Critical Update
KB828041". I can download the file, but when it attempts to install
immediately get the message "update unsucessful". I've made sure tha
antivirus and firewall software is disabled when attempting update, bu
to no avail

Hello...
I had what seems to be the same problem.
I just installed the Office Standard upgrade and when I tried to do the
updates, I was unsuccessful with KB828041 using the Office Update feature.
I tried phoning Microsoft. While waiting for 40 minutes on the phone for
someone to come to my assistance, I found an answer myself.
Here's what I did.
I went to the www.microsoft.com site and then to the Office section. There I
clicked on Browse Downloads. Under the Office 2003 heading, there was
another heading: Updates. I clicked on that and it listed KB828041. On the
right side of the window explaining the patch, there was a download link. I
clicked on that and downloaded the patch to my computer. I then went to
where it was saved, launched it and the patch was installed successfully.
Circuitous....but it worked.
