Office 2003 updates fail with Windows 7

Office 2003 SP3, KB974771, KB976882, KB907417 all fail every day since Dec.
21, 2009 with code 80070643 "Windows Update encountered an unknown error".
These are old updates judging by the 2008 publication dates. Why are they
showing up now? I know I can "hide" them, but that's not really a fix to
whatever is causing this wierd problem.

I have been using Office 2003 on this Windows 7 machine since early Nov. 2009.
One would wonder whether Office 2003 & Windows 7 were written by the same
company. I cannot open any office file directly. First, I must open Word or
Excel, then respond to several popups, then use "File Open" to open the doc
or spreadsheet. What a nuisance!

On the other hand, old apps using NTVDM.EXE are working fine with Windows 7
(some did not work properly using Vista).

Hi,

Try the clearing temp folders, cookies and intenet explorer temp files. In
short reset the internet explorer settings and try updates . If thatdoes not
work, download the updates and install them.(type:"download <update number>
in www.bing.com)

If none of the above works, try the steps mentioned on the KB 304498
