Office 2003 - updates failing consistently - help please

N

NuttingCDEF

I am pretty much at my wits end . . . I'm trying to install the latest
servce pack for Office 2003, but it is failing and nothing I do seems
to make any difference. Any help or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

1. Updates of Office 2003 through Microsoft Update have been failing
for quite a while, so I thought I'd try to install SP3 (currently have
SP2 installed). Microsoft Update works fine for Windows Updates, but
doesn't even show that there are any relevant Office updates that
might be available, though it used to do the job till about a year ago
(which was long after MS Installer V 3.1 was installed).

2. Using the old Office Update site just gives a message as follows:

############################

Office Update is unable to check for updates
The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this
computer. This may be happening because of one of the following
reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the
Office Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home
page and try running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied
Office updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden
directory on your computer. MSP files are stored on your computer
after update installation completes because they need to be referenced
for future update operations. If the files are missing you will not be
able to apply Office updates. You may also be unable to uninstall
Office products as a result of the same problem. Please contact
Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from
Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For
more information see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for
Install Source if Unavailable.

############################

The link is to KB251214.

As I've tried running the updates with the original CD in the drive
and it doesn't prompt me for anything, this doesn't seem to help.

There are certainly plenty of files in the Windows\Instaler folder -
though whether anything is missing I do not know - I amsure that I
have never (knowingly) deleted anything from that folder.

3. Using the Add / Remove Programs control panel, I have tried both
Remove and Repair options - neither of which has any discernible
effect (I'd be quite happy cleaning Office 2003 out and going for a
clean reinstall - if I could . . .).

4. Running Setup from the original CD just gives me the "no valid
sequence could be found for the set of patches" error message. I've
tried everything in KB913754 whichis the only article I can find that
refers to this eror message, but with no change at all. This does
show a patch sequencer error, but I have no idea what is causing it.

The MS Installer log file for my latest attempt is shown below

Hi, NuttingCDEF,

So, you've tried running the patches individually from their KB articles
(not through the automatic update utilities)?

If so, did you try the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility? That might be of
help. If you have your original installation media and product key, then you
can run the utility to remove registry references to your Office
installation, then re-install Office (to restore it and those registry
entries). Then try the patches.

Many thanks for the link - I wasn't aware of that utility. I'll try
it and see what happens.

P.S. I haven't attempted to go through all the possible patches - I've
just been working on the basis that automatic updates of office hadn't
been working for a long time, so attempting to apply the latest
service pack (manually or automatically) was a good place to start
trying to sort things out.

Yes, this worked first time - used the utility to remove Office 2003
installer stuff, reinstalled from original media, then ran Microsoft
Update to get latest SP etc. from the web - no problems at all. Many
thanks.
