Office 2003 vs Office 2007

Trish

Hi, i am not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, but I have
been using XP Pro and Office 2003 for some years now and I love it. However,
I tutor retired people, many of whom have new laptops with Vista and Office
2007. I sometimes flounder when I am trying to help them find something on a
Word menu because it is so different. Would it be worth my purchasing a
copy of Office 2007 and, if so, can I run it on my current laptop with XP
Pro, or do I have to use Vista?

As an aside, i know of someone who went to Office 2007, hated it and went
back to 2003. If I make the change it is unlikely i would do that, but I do
seek comfort that the bugs have been ironed out now??

Perhaps there is another way that I (for my tutoring purposes) can
familiarise myself with the menu system of Word 2007 - is there a site I
could view?

i would be grateful for any guidance, and apologise if i have put this in
the wrong place!! :)

Office2007 runs on WinXp just fine
You can install all or part of 2007 in parallel with 2003, but only a single
instance of Outlook

Hi Trish,

You can run Microsoft Office 2007 on Windows XP+Service Pack 2. You'll find more on the requirements and packages available on
http://office.microsoft.com/suites

You can download a 60 day trial from
http://trymicrosoftoffice.com
or, if you have a high speed connection you may find working with the online version helpful as a starting point.

This page has some downloadable and online interactive was/is menu choices to help find 2003 to 2007 command and tool locations and
many of the Office 2003 keyboard shortcuts still work in 2007.

As to bugs <G>, pretty much all software has something that can interact in an unexpected manner with its host environment and other
programs, but whether you encounter any one of them can depend on a lot of factors. :) Some folks seem to never hit anything
significant, other folks feel quite 'snakebit' <g>.

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME? A TECHNICIAN? I'M NEAR TEARS--ACTUALLY, I'M
ALREADY CRYING.

I tried to start a new thread but was unable to.... I used the trial of
Office 2007, which I found too intrusive and cumbersome to use in my work.
(I'm a writer.) However, I did use the program; and now that the trial is
over, I find that the files didn't convert back to my old program (Office XP
2002).

Can someone please help a weeping fiction writer?

If you are a technician, why are you using the crummy web interface instead
of a News reader?

You need to download and install the Office 2007 compatibility pack.

What do you mean? You aren't saying that...? You must be wrong about that.
Next thing you know you'll be telling me that there's no such thing as the
Tooth Fairy.

Ted R Sanderson

hi, trish!

i too have used office 2003 since it came out on win xp pro sp 2

and i also have friends whom i help from time to time who are using vista
and office 2007 .

i kept win xp pro but recently upgraded to office 2007 and although there is
a learning curve (mostly finding the commands i use which will be easier now
thanks to bob's links) i find it to be a major advancement over 2003 for
many reasons plus it seems to run a little faster for me than 2003.

i would feel comfortable recommending the upgrade to office 2007 for anyone
who uses and loves 2003.

those folks who didn't like it might not have taken the time to figure out
how it works and some of the necessary things you have to do to upgrade your
old files if you like, etcetera.

office 2007 is much smarter than 2003 and allows you to really fine tune it
to just the menus you use in your work.

good luck!

ted s.
