Office 2003 won't install on my new machine

I have a retail copy of Office 2003 that I originally had on my 4 year
old machine running Win2k. I got a new machine and want to transfer
it, but it won't take the CD key. What is going on? I have the
original package and key number. Is WinXP somehow different and
requires a different key?

Either you have the wrong Product Key for Microsoft Office 2003
or you are not reading and entering the Product Key correctly.

You might have a trial version of office 2003 on the new system which
needs to come out first.

I have a trial version of office which i bought with the machine. It has

i run the install wizard i get an error message sating that a fatal error has
occured.

Would i have to uninstall the expired trial first? would that cause me to
lose certain funtions e.g outlook.

Please advise as i would rather keep on running the trial until the new
microsoft office becomes available this year.

When the Trial version times out, that's the end of the show. No
extensions granted.
