office 2003 word replacement

For some reason when I mark a word (mark it blue with the left click using
mouse) and then try to replace it with another word, it dosnt delete the
previous word with the new one. The new one is put in front of the old one
and then I have to manually delete the other one. I didnt use to have this
problem and cant find the reason for it. Any ideas??

Hi obo,

On the status bar at the bottom of the Word screen is 'OVR' (Overstrike mode) turned on? If not you can double click it, or check
the setting in
Tools=>Options=>Edit
for 'typing replaces selection'
