Office 2004 update 11.3.8 problem

T

Tony M.

Tried update 11.3.8 for Office 2004 on my powerbook. I received
some message which led me to check that "Microsoft Office 2004"/
Office/"Microsoft Component Plugin" was indeed version 11.3.7 (which
it is).
Attempted second update (I quote the response verbatim)
generated the following error message:
"The installer could not locate the correct version of the software
required to install this update. See the Read Me file included with
this installer to determine if your software meets the requirements
for this update."

I am using the automatic update feature and don't see any "Read Me"
file. Also, I don't have my original installation disk with me
because I am travelling, but don't see why that might be a problem.
Otherwise my log file shows successful prior updates from 11.2.0
through 11.3.7.
Anyone have ideas, suggestions about what might have gone wrong, and
how I might complete the update?

Did you try the suggestion I made in response to your earlier post? What
was the result?

Hi Tony
I've had similar problem, was happily working from home this morning,
opted to auto-update my Office 2004 with version 11.3.8 and now none
of my office programs will open. They just bounce in the dock and
stop.

I've tried repairing permissions and it told me once verifying disk
that the "underlying task reported failure on exit". I've also tried
running a pre-binding script recommended by someone but that's not
worked either. I have double checked and I have successfully run the
previous updates too.

the orginal error message I got with the update was data couldn't
match but didn't give me any other option other than ok.

I'm really worried as of course if I have to re-install Office - or
even perform and Archive and Install I'm going to lose all of my work
emails :(

If anyone has any other suggestions I'd be most grateful. At least in
the interim I can use webmail to send and recieve - phew.

Thanks

Not true. Assuming you are using Entourage, the emails and everything
else are stored in UserName/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004
Identities/Main Identity (or whatever the name of the identity is). You
should be backing up that identity folder. While you should certainly
back it up before doing a Remove and Reinstall and Re-Update of Office,
the Remove and Reinstall should not touch the MUD folder at all.

Side notes--an Archive and Install applies to the OS X system, not to
Office, and would be used only for a *very* big problem that Remove and
Reinstall Office and OS X maintenance approaches did not fix. It seems
out of place in this discussion. Also, Remove and Reinstall (and you
must use the Remove Office Tool first) is never the first step for
fixing Office--there are many other troubleshooting steps to try first.

Sadly, I have no suggestions on the actual problem. It seems the
standard approaches have already been posted--you'll need to find them
on the group.

I applied 11.3.8 and Word is gone, so did my Word files!

Hi - have managed to resolve problem - see my new post on the site.
Thanks though for these tips and can't believe how quickly people have
responded. Will now continue to use this site for reference - very
helpful.

thanks

You shouldn't lose anything if you reinstall Office (except some of your
preferences), as long as you run Remove Office (just trashing the
applications likely won't do much for you).

Entourage stores emails in your identity in the ~:Documents:Microsoft
User Data folder (where ~ is your home directory), which is not touched
by Remove Office.

Even if you archive and install, you won't lose that data.
