Office 2007: 2 instances of program opening at once

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but I couldn't think how
to explain the problem to search. I'm using Vista HP and Office 2007.

When I double click an existing word or excel document it opens, but
so does another blank excel or word document. Anyone got any idea how
to fix this.

Also,and I don't know whether this is related or not, the Outlook
synchronization logo in my task bar shows that it is syncronizing most
of the time.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Syncing means its polling for new mail (auto send/receive)
Check the settings in outlook that its not less than 10 minutes

The Outlook constantly synching is a known issue that Microsoft is working
on a fix for shortly.

As for the second document, if you rename normal.dotm or dotx, does this
behavior disappear? Likewise for Excel, rename that template if the Word fix
works.
