Office 2007 and Vista

Jim S

I am contemplating on buying a new updated desktop computer that has vista
as an operating system, what I am worried about is the ability to use my
current Office 2007 which is installed on a PC with XP on the new PC with
vista or am I going to have to buy a new version of Office?

Hello Jim,

Vista 32 bit or Vista 64 bit?

With Vista 32 bit no issue but with Vista 64 bit I would certainly go
for Office 64 bit.

Bernd

One licence................one computer.

To use Office on both computers you will need to purchase another copy of
Office.

I dont want to use it on both computers, I want to move it to the new
computer and delete it off the old computer.

Hi Gordon,

Actually, the Office 2007 EULA allows installation on multiple PCs. For example Office Professional can be installed simultaneously
on a desktop PC and a laptop, or on two laptops. Office Home & Student can be installed on up to 3 PCs (I'm not sure about any
configuration limitations).

If your Office 207 came with the first PC (ie it is a OEM version) then the
EULA does not permit it to be installed on another PC

I have Office 2007 working on both my Vista Ultimate 64 bit and Vista
Business 32 bit with no problems. I also install Office 2007 for clients
with Vista or XP and also no problems. So, unless your own machine you will
get has a problem or the install is stuffed up (both of which are highly
unlikely) you wont have a problem, either.

No such thing as Office 64 bit. Office works on both 64 bit and 32 bit. I
know that for a fact as I do it right now.

That depends entirely on which one he gets. Some Office 2007 versions come
legally licenced for 3 computers. He should check the version he has.
Besides, as Microsoft also says even in the days when it was one licence for
one machine on a one person business or home machine, if the Office in
question has been removed from the original machine it can be installed on
the new one so long as the Office wasn't some sort of special deal that gets
done at certain times for certain reasons and thus defined for one machine
only.

If you bought Office independent of the old machine and take if off that
machine you are quite legally entitled to put it on the new one. Check the
back of your cartridge, though. Office 2007, in some editions, is legally
entitled to be installed on 3 machines using the one licence number. It is
in small print down the bottom if you have one of those, on the back of it.
In that sort of case it wouldn't matter if you have it on the old and the
new machine. I have it on 2 of my 3 machines legally as it was noted on the
package that it was legal. Oh and yes I bought this through a large retail
store chain so it was a definite legal purchase.

The config limitations are available to you at a glance on the pictures on
the back. Some versions of the Home and Student package don't come with
Outlook 2007 for example and some do but without other things. The chart on
the back shows this.

Correct but you should point out that a stand alone version IS allowed to be
uninstalled on the original and installed on the new one, for clarity's
sake.

Look on the back of your Office 2007 cartridge at the bottom . In small
print, it MAY say that it is eligible to be installed on 3 different
machines depending on which one you bought. Even if you bought only a one
licence package, you are legally OK to install it on another machine
providing you remove it from the first one.
