OFFICE 2007 (beta) Activation Woes

R

Rebecca

Greetings. I realize this issue has been raised in several previous posts,
but the advice we have been getting doesn't seem to work, but I thought I
might give it one more shot. Whenever I try to activate the programs in the
suite, I keep getting an error message, the gist of which is that my computer
can't connect to the Internet, which is not the problem because the
connection is working fine, except when it comes to activation. Any new
advice out there, because "be patient and just keep trying" isn't working at
all? I'm worried because the number of times I have left to open the
programs is rapidly running out.

Hi,
Had the same issue for a long time.
Seems my router(i'm using wireless) was set to to high of a security; and it
wouldn't connect to certain websites;based on it's encryption. By accident;
I found that out;because I was getting as frustrated as you must be. i
remembered that I had set the security to WPA2-AES?the newest out for
wireless encryption?;and alot of sites don't support it yet. It happens that
even Mcafee's support website wouldn't allow me to connect. Got the same
error -not able to connect to the internet. Even tho I was connected. Set
the router encryption back to WPA2 TK???? and Bingo!! activation. Don't know
if you are using a router;but that was my solution. And it worked.

Thanks, Jeff. You have given me some hope. Yes, I'm using a wireless router,
but I don't know how to change the settings as you recommended (though I
looked everywhere in the Control Panel). Could you please tell me where and
how to do this? And please keep your explanation as simple as possible,
something maybe even a seven-year-old could probably understand?

Forget the previous reply to your post, Jeff. I found out it was my
anti-hacker software that had set security too high. I temporarily reduced
it (tremble! shiver!), and then raised it after the successful activation.

Ok.
First what brand of router?
2nd usually need access into it-not from the xp control panel;but rather
telnet directly into it.
this is usually actually easy.
1) open up your browser IE6 or netscape or whatever you use to get to the
internet.
2) type in the address bar-exactly this 192.168.1.1 then hit enter
3) a window should pop up asking for username and password.
4) This is where it gets a little tricky and you may need to contact the
manufacturer of the router's tech support,but if it's Linksys;that's what I
have and can walk you step by step thruogh it.
4 If it's a newer Linksys-the default username is Admin
and the password is(Simply) Password
5) if its not linksys or someone has set it up already;then you'll need to
call the routers tech support ppl to gain access into it. Ah but most
routers give the default username and password in the setup instructions
that came with the router. But generally they are similar;like admin or
administrator and login or password etc.
If that works-a menu will open up and give you ltsa stuff.
Um I hate to cut you short-but I have an Emergency MRI scheduled for 6am
and need to get to sleep. If you can wait till tommorrow;I'll be happy to
help you; if you need quicker assistance;call the routers tech suppport ppl.
I know for a fact;Linksys and Netgear are 24/7 and they should be able to
help. If you can wait;I'll get back to you in the morning. Sorry,
Jeff

Oh Good,
Well at least I helped pin it down to a security setting-even if it
wasn't the router!! LOL Hope you activated O.K.

Thanks, Jeff. You sent me off in the right direction. MS Office people
should get this information out. I'd save people a lot of time and hassle.

No problem,
Glad you got it resolved!!
