office 2007 beta - or not!

J

Juniper

Recently, picking up updates, I was advised that my version of Office 2007
professional was a beta and that I should upgrade. This is not what it says
on the 'About' information so I decided to check the disc - no disc! And I'm
out of time (apparently) to get one. So, #1 how do I get updates if
microsoft won't service a beta even though I don't think it is, and #2 how do
I get a disc just in case I need to reinstall? I paid out for the original
in good faith to a reputable local PC shop. And no, they don't know either.

I'm looking at the box, it says it's been issued with a new PC (which it was)
and that the recovery disc is not included in the package. It also says that
the licence must be purchased within 90 days of purchasing the PC and inside
it says that I need the receipts for both the PC and purchase of the licence
to get the backup copy of the disc. I have a receipt but I don't think it's
itemised. Bum!
Thanks for replying - I'm off to give the shop an ear-bashing!

The fact that your documents state that a license must be purchased
indicates that you have a trial version of Office.

I believed I had purchased the licence, I certainly paid as though I had and
asked the shop to install the software, which I'd assumed they did until now.
It's been activated and there's been no on-screen notification about a
licence but a recent notification about it being a beta version puzzled me,
hence the rummaging around. Anyway, I've apparently successfully purchased a
backup disc for 11 quid from Microsoft and they're also happily downloading
the files as we speak so I'm assuming all is well as I doubt we would have
got this far without a paid-up licence. It's been an education - thank you
all!

Wait a minute. You **PAID** for a 90 day trial version?

Being kind, I would say that the dealer you got the PC from made a mistake.
Trial versions are FREE!

Right, here we go, I didn't have a trial version, I maybe had the beta
version but there's no evidence beyond an update service that said so, I have
been able to download and order the recovery disc at no cost except for the
delivery of the disc. I think the matter is resolved although the route has
been puzzling! I don't think the shop was in error or sold me a duff piece
of kit. The CD case, had I checked it earlier, was clear about the contents
(or lack thereof) and Microsoft has produced the required files without
complaint. I reckon the major issue here was inadequate communication (shop
to me) and some screwy communication (downloads to me) that are hopefully
redundant now. I still have a functioning Office suite so that suits me
fine! Thanks to everyone for commenting and contributing. I hope the thread
helps someone else. It's good to know you people are out there.

There are also versions of Office that OEMs can install. For example, you
might purchase Office Basic, and it comes installed on your machine along
with a trial version of Office Professional. When the trial runs out on the
"Pro-only" apps (like PowerPoint, for example), I could see where that could
easily lead someone to think they'd paid for a trial version.

I don't know that that's what happened to the original poster, but I thought
I'd mention it just for future reference.
