Office 2007: Cannot enter Maintenance Mode for Repair

(Win XP Pro SP3, IE7)
When I use either the CD or the "Change" button in Add/Remove, I cannot
enter the Office 2007 Maintenance/Change features mode. A box flashes on the
screen something like "Gathering Information" and then disappears. No message

I believe the Remove button in Add/Remove is functional. If in the event
this can't be fixed and I should need to uninstall Office 2007 and reinstall,
is there a scrubber tool that will completely eliminate the files etc.--that
would do what KB 928218 has you do manually?

No scrubber tool for 2007 that I'm aware of. I would try to uninstall and
re-install, just on account.

What have you tried? Did it ever work?

This morning Microsoft told me to manually uninstal, rather than use the
automatic unintal. It's a bunch of Reg keys to delete and folder renames, but
I'll have no problem with any of that--just time consuming. A scrubber
would've been nice like with earlier Office versions.
