Office 2007 Compatibility Pack Errors

Matt Winberry

Hello. I have a user (User A) who is sending .docm files to other users,
including User B. Other users, (including myself) are able to open these
files, but User B gets an error that the file is a pre-release version of an
Office 2007 file, and could not be opened with that version of the
Compatibility Pack. We are all using Windows XP with Office XP, and none
have participated in Beta for 2007 on their machines. I have determined that
the issue is not Policy related on the machine. I don't believe that the
Compatibility pack is working correctly. I've ripped out anything having to
do with Office 2007 file formats and reinstalled the Compatibility pack with
no luck. After reinstalling the Compatibility pack, I attempted to save a
Word document as a Word 2007 document, and received an error saving the file.
What else can I try?

This error was a bug in the first version of the Office 2007 Compatibility
Pack. There was an updated release of the package provided last summer
(available from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-
8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en). Uninstall the one that 'User B' is
using, and then install this one. Also install any updates for the OCP
that are recommended by Microsoft Update. Problems can also occur if the
Excel, PowerPoint and Word applications have not been properly updated with
any applicable public updates. So you should verify that. The Office XP
applications need to at least be at the SP3 version level. You can verify
that SP3 is installed via the Windows Add or Remove Programs control panel
(the About dialog is not a reliable way to determining if SP3 is installed).
