Office 2007 Compatibility Update problems

My office runs Office XP, so we are unable to open 0ffice 2007 files. I have
downloaded and installed Office 2007 compatibility pack per the following kb
article.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en..

When I open Office 2007 files, i get a message saying this is a pre-release
version of the compatibility pack and that it will only open pre-release
version of office 2007. Then ask if I want to download the most
recent version, and if you say yes it takes you to the above link where the
same file is available. Has anyone found a fix for this or is Microsoft
forcing everyone to upgrade to 2k7, Should I go
out and buy open office from now on?

High priority updates were installed, and are always installed. There
are no other high priority updates to be installed via microsoft update,
windows update and office update sites. The problems exist for a domain
limited user as well as my own local admin account. My update history even
shows that there were two additional security updates installed to the
compatibility update.

Yes thank you. From the sound of it we are getting message 5. Since most of
the files we are getting this error message come from students, its probably
that they are using illegal copies of the beta release. They are going to
have to save as word xp or 2002 to send to us.

thanks for the link.
