What are the licence restrictions on this product? E.g. Do you have
to be a registered student?

No, the "Home" part of the name gives a clue. However, you are NOT allowed
to use it for commercial purposes...

And how in the world would anyone know what you use it for or is this
done on the honor system?

That's why I asked if MS will e.g. read my correspondence when using
Word. The software can only be used with internet access...

Eh? Of course it can't. Where did you get this impression that you can only
use Word with internet access?

Hi Johannes,

The 60 day, free, trial versions of MS Office require activation within the first 30 sessions of the Office apps (any combination).
For the *trial* versions, the only method for activation is online.

For the retail (purchased) editions of Office 2007 you can choose to use telephone activation or online activation.

The Home and Student edition title bar will say its for 'Non Commercial Use', and the license agreement defines what the limitations
of 'commercial' are.

If Office 2007 is installed, you can open Word and use
Office Button=>Resources=>About and there click on the
'View the Microsoft Software License Terms' choice.

Microsoft does not 'monitor' your documents. As with most laws and rules choosing to abide by them is pretty much up to the
individual. :)
