Hi,
I have over 6000 Office 97 to Office 2003 files (word, powerPoint, Excel,
etc) residing on several network drives. To convert these files,
one-at-a-time, would be man-hour intensive. Is there an automated tool that
I can use that would convert these files, say over a weekend?

Any time you open one of the earlier format files with Word, PPT or Excel,
etc. 2007 you can save it as a Word, PPT or Excel, etc. 2007 format file.
Why would you need to convert? The only reason I could see to convert all
the files is if MS decided in Office 201X to stop reading the '97-2003
format files. I don't think that would be especially smart of Microsoft to
do that (although they have done dumb things in the past.)

The programs that are out there to convert from one format to another that I
have used in the past are normally only half effective in keeping all the
data properly formatted.

The reason I need then converted is one of space. A typical Office 2003 file
size is 5-10 MB, when converted to Office 2007 format, it is typically 60%
smaller. When multiplied over 6000 times - that is a large hunk of space.

I need the disk space, and dont want to spend megabuck upgrading the storage
array.

This is fairly normal when converting from one app to another rather than from
one version of an app to a later version.

Converting from, say, PPT 97 to PPT (whatever) can be done by automating PPT to
open the older format file and saving to the current format. If that mungs the
formatting, it's no better or worse than would happen if manually opening the
files one by one and re-saving.

There's a macro to automate this in PPT here; it only does a folder full at a
time but could be modified to do more:

Batch re-save presentations; update older presentations to newer PowerPoint
version

Thanks for explaining the reasoning behind your need.
