I tried and Office 2007, then removed it and re-installed Office XP
because I need compatibility with Office XP for work.

I'd like to re-install Office 2007 but I'm wondering if there is some
way to force the save files as earlier types option as default so I
won't have to worry about trying to remember to do so each time?

I'd look around but, as I mentioned, I've removed it and don't want to
re-install it unless there is some way to make the earlier formats the
defaults for Word and Excell at least.

Thanks!

Hi David,

In Office Button=>Options section of the core (ribboned) apps you can set a default save format in the 'Save' options area. This
also limits the feature set available when you start a new document.

Thanks, Bob, I'll give Office 2007 another try. I still don't know how
well I'll deal with the confusion of using Office XP at work and Office
2007 at home (us old geezers don't take to change as well as we used
to) but at least I'll be able to open what ever it is that I do.... <G>

There is also be a compatibility pack available that enables
Office 2000, XP and 2003 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to open
Office 2007 files.

Thanks but that's no help to me since that would need to be installed
at work, the fix has to be at my end.

Getting them to update at work would be difficult so soon after they
have upgraded from the water wheel to the steam powered computers....

OK, it's really not quite that bad but as you might imagine the
hardware/software is not the latest in an organization that relies
almost entirely on donations. If someone here would like to donate a
VLK license for Windows Vista, Office 2007 and the hardware to run them
please let me know, OK?
