Office 2007 SP1 - unable to install

C

Chris

I'm getting errors in Event Log:

When installing via Microsoft Update:

Product: Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 - Update '2007 Microsoft Office
Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1)' could not be installed. Error code 1603.
Additional information is available in the log file e:\tmp\MSI963d8.LOG.

Additionally, MU interface displays error 78F (???)

When I'm trying to install manually from extracted MSP:

Product: Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 - Error 1935.During installation
component assembly {46174A62-FAFE-4BD6-9662-F9A9F588F034} error occured.
HRESULT: 0x80131047. Assembly inteface: IAssemblyCacheItem, function:
Commit, assembly name:
Microsoft.Office.InfoPath.Client.Internal.Host,fileVersion="12.0.6215.1000",version="12.0.0.0000000",culture="neutral",publicKeyToken="71E9BCE111E9429C",processorArchitecture="MSIL"

I had to translate this error, it might not be 100% accurate.

I saw some solution about reinstaling or repairing NET Framework, but
solution is rather for XP, at least installing Net 1.1 doesn't change
anything.
I enabled logging, but I'm getting tons of junk in log files and nothing
conclusive.

I'm using Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 Enterprise, also Project 2007 and
Visio 2007 installed.

Thanks for any ideas.
Chris

Seems like you got a horked (bad install) of your 2007 Enterprise. I strongly suggest that you back up you Off files and uninstall the 2007 Enterprise and then re-install it after a clean reboot making sure that the install goes correctly with no other multitasking in the background.

You also might want to get in touch with the IT person responsible at the Company from where you purchased this Enterprise Edition of Office 2007 under the Home User Program

Hi Chris,

If possible, send the log file to me for further research. My email address is (e-mail address removed).

At this point, follow the steps below to see if it works.

#1 check the Office 2007 installation
===============
1. Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

2. Select Office 2007. Click Change. Choose Repair to repair it. Can it be finished properly?
3. If not, repair it from the Office 2007 installation CD. If it also doesn't work, there should be problem with the Office 2007
installation, refer to the following KB article to remove and reinstall Office 2007.
928218 How to uninstall the 2007 Office system if you cannot uninstall it by using the "Add or Remove Programs" feature
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;928218

Install the Office 2007 SP1 update again. If it doesn't work, go to next step.

#2 Install the latest version of Windows Installer
==========================
Patch deployment for the 2007 Office release system requires Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. If you do not have the required Windows
Installer version, you might receive an error message similar to the following during installation:
"2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1) failed to install"

Download and install the latest version of the Windows Installer (Instmsiw.exe) from the following link.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en

#3 Make sure that you have sufficient free disk space on the Windows system drive.
==========================
Office 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) requires that you have at least 1.75 GB of free space on Windows Vista and at least 1.1 GB of free
space on other versions of Windows, much of which will be returned after the installation is complete.

#4 check the Local Install Source (LIS) for Office 2007
===============
Since all Office 2007 installs create a Local Install Source (LIS), updates such as SP1 will require this to be present and in good
condition to complete. If users have tried to recover hard disk space by removing all or part of the LIS (the MSOCache folder), it will
need to be repaired before applying SP1.

Please insert the Office 2007 installation CD (or access the original Office 2007 installation source) and then choose Repair to repair the
Office 2007 installation. It will restore the LIS.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Emily Lin,

Well, as far as I know this installation DVD was downloaded from Microsoft
Licensing Page, but I'll check it.

Emily,
I sent you logs.
Also I went through steps you provided.
#1 Repair went fine, no problems found, however apparently installer changed
somthing becouse it requested restart.
#2 I'm unable to install this package, error is "Not enough storage is
available to process this command." However, having Vista I think I have
already latest version installed?
#3 There is pleanty of space, 80GBs on system drive, almost 200GBs on
second.
#4 I have MSOCache dir on system drive, contains: 1 031 038 717 bytes in 154
file(s), in 30 directories, difficult to say what's inside.

Thanks for help,
Chris

I have the same issue too. It updated fine at home. At work, no go. I am the
domain admin, hence no security rights. I tried as local admin, tons of
space, killed AV and firewall... still I get this damned error.... I can not
tell you how disappointed I am with Microsoft for putting out a half working
update... has anybody solved this issue yet? Error 78f?

I managed to fix it and identify the issue. The issue is that only trusted
installer (a new vista service) can install to certain protected registry
keys... Now, I tried to repair the keys for admin then stopped and restored a
backup thinking that was the wrong way to go. I de-installed office,
re-installed it, and Sp1 went fine first go with no fight. Sooo the moral of
the story is that it is linked to either a bad install or a bad hotfix along
the way. simply remove, reinstall and woila.. works fine...

I hope this helps ;0

Hi Nico,

If you place the Office 2007 CD in the drive you used for installation and install SP1 do you still get the 78F error?

I got my CD from the launch and now I can't find it. So I guess I'm
out of luck here.

Hi Bob,

Finally, I got SP1 installed. I reinstall Office 2007 because it was
presinstalled in my computer and I would say it was the problems.

Thanks for your help

Try placing *any* CD in the drive, and post back to let us know whether that
worked.

Debbie

It has to be the Office CD. Since the SP1 will call on this Office Install CD no other CD will do
