Office 2007 .tmp files

Hi everyone,

I've been working on an issue with Office 2007 whereby when a user saves a
document (may it be a .doc, .docx or any other Office format) it sporadically
generates a new file called xxxxxxxx.tmp (it is always 8.3 and always the
same size as the document).

I thought this may be an issue with temporary files but that doesn't make
sense as that's not the naming format they use and also the files are saved
in the same directory.

This has been a frustrating problem that I can't seem to get to the bottom
of so would love to hear if anyone else has had this issue.
Oh, and we are running Office 2007 SP1.

Many thanks,

If you close the original document, does the .tmp file disappear or persist?

Nope, the files don't automatically delete - we've got hundreds of them lying
around now.

Does this happen in network drives/directories or on local drives/
directories? If the former, what are the effective file and directory
permissions for the user saving the DOC or DOCX files? If the latter,
the problem is usually an incompatibility with antivirus software
settings.

Interesting point, I _think_ it is only happening on network drives but it
doesn't seem to be a permission problem as I have the problem also and am a
Domain Admin therefore have full permissions everywhere.

....

As an admininstrator you're able to CHANGE permissions to any
directory or file, but it doesn't necessarily mean you start off with
full access to all directories and files. The Office applications
create 8-dot-3 temp files (dot-3 always .tmp) in the same directories
as the files opened in Office applications. Lack of Modify permissions
has been known to cause this problem.

Hey Harlan,

Sorry, I should've been more specific, the network shares that we have allow
Domain Admin's "Full Access".
